Downtown Washington, Inc., a nationally recognized and award-winning Main Street organization committed to the revitalization, economic development, and historic preservation of downtown Washington, Missouri, is seeking a dynamic, full-time Executive Director to lead its mission-driven work.
With a proven track record of more than 30 years, Downtown Washington, Inc. is an accredited Main Street America™ program supported by an engaged Board of Directors, a dedicated volunteer network, and a professional staff of three full time employees. Located along the scenic Missouri River, Washington is a thriving community of 15,000 residents and a proud recipient of the Great American Main Street Award.
Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of Downtown Washington, Inc. and is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of programs and initiatives that support the organization’s mission. Grounded in the principles of historic preservation and economic vitality, the Executive Director coordinates a wide range of projects aimed at fostering a vibrant, thriving, and accessible downtown district.
This position works closely with staff, volunteers, businesses, property owners, government agencies, and partner organizations at the local, regional, and national levels. The Executive Director must be a strategic thinker, compelling communicator, and strong organizational leader who thrives in a fast-paced, community-focused environment.
This is a full-time position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week, with frequent evening and weekend responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Direct and manage all aspects of the Main Street revitalization program using historic preservation as a catalyst for economic growth.
Collaborate with stakeholders to support business retention, recruitment, and development efforts.
Promote downtown Washington as a destination for residents, visitors, and investors through innovative marketing and placemaking strategies.
Lead fundraising efforts including sponsorships, grants, and donor relations.
Oversee staff, organizational operations, and volunteer engagement.
Serve as a spokesperson and ambassador for the organization within the community and beyond.
Ensure compliance with Main Street America program standards and reporting requirements.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience in a relevant field such as public administration, business, urban planning, historic preservation, communications, or nonprofit management.
Experience in nonprofit leadership, downtown development, or Main Street revitalization strongly preferred.
Familiarity with Main Street America and certification as a Main Street Revitalization Professional is a plus.
